BETHALTO - Major Michael Hogan was sworn in Monday as the newest member of the Bethalto Police Department as a major and will serve as deputy chief of police, the Bethalto Police Department announced on Monday, June 15, 2026.
Village Clerk Sue Lowrance administered the oath of office in Bethalto, where the department is based at 213 N. Prairie St.

Hogan is a Civic Memorial High School graduate and began his law enforcement career as a Bethalto Police Explorer. He later served for five years as a patrol officer with the Mascoutah Police Department before transferring to the Illinois State Police, where he served for 22 years and attained the rank of sergeant.
In a statement, the Bethalto Police Department said Hogan “brings a wealth of law enforcement experience, leadership, and commitment to public service.”
The department also said it was “excited to welcome him back to Bethalto” and looked forward to “the knowledge and professionalism he will bring to our department and community.”
