SPRINGFIELDIllinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias is encouraging Illinoisans to join the growing number of customers skipping the DMV by completing routine driver and vehicle transactions through the Secretary of State’s online services.

Every day, up to 2,000 customers visit DMV facilities for driver and vehicle services that can be completed online thanks to the office’s ongoing modernization efforts. Before making a trip, Illinoisans can visit www.ilsos.gov to see if their transaction can be handled online from home, work or on the go.

“Why take time out of your busy schedule to spend time at the DMV when you can get it done online?” Giannoulias said. “Most routine driver and vehicle services can be completed online in just a few minutes, from wherever you are. If you can get it done online from your computer or from your phone, you can skip the trip, save yourself time and get back to the things that matter most.”

Over the past year, Illinoisans completed nearly 4.4 million online renewals of eligible driver’s licenses, state IDs and vehicle stickers, demonstrating the growing use of the Secretary of State’s online services.

During the first seven months of 2026, some 560,000 eligible driver’s license and ID transactions were completed online, compared with nearly 392,000 during the same period in 2025 – a 43% increase.

The percentage of eligible driver’s license and ID transactions completed online also rose from approximately 14% during the first seven months of 2025 to 22% during the same period in 2026.

Vehicle sticker renewals have also continued to shift online. During the first seven months of 2026, Illinoisans completed more than 2.25 million vehicle sticker renewals online, compared with nearly 2.17 million during the same period in 2025 – a nearly 4% increase.

The Secretary of State’s office offers a variety of online services, including:

  • Renewing eligible driver’s licenses and state IDs
  • Renewing vehicle registration and purchasing license plate stickers
  • Ordering duplicate driver’s licenses, IDs and vehicle documents
  • Updating addresses and other personal information

Illinoisans are encouraged to check the full list of available online services at www.ilsos.gov before heading to a DMV facility.

Alexi Giannoulias was sworn into office as Illinois’ 38th Secretary of State on January 9, 2023. In this capacity, he also serves as the State Librarian and State Archivist. Giannoulias is committed to transforming the office’s antiquated IT infrastructure to modernize operations and improve customer service for all Illinoisans.
