Granite City Armed Suspect Dies After Officer-Involved Shooting

Illinois State Police confirmed the details days after officers and deputies responded to an Edison Avenue home for reports of multiple weapons.

GRANITE CITY — A man shot by law enforcement officers on Monday morning, Aug. 24, 2026, in Granite City died from his injuries, Illinois State Police confirmed Friday, Aug. 28, 2026, after authorities said officers and deputies responded to reports of a man armed with multiple weapons at a home on Edison Avenue at East 20th Street.

Granite City Police officers and Madison County Sheriff's deputies arrived at the scene on Aug. 24, 2026, around 10:20 a.m.

Granite City Police officers and Madison County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the scene this past Monday. According to Illinois State Police, which is handling the investigation, an armed man refused to comply with commands to drop weapons in his possession.

At some point, one Granite City Police officer and one Madison County deputy shot the man, authorities said. The suspect was transported to a local hospital in critical condition, and none of the officers were injured in the case.

Ryan Cerentano was the person shot on the roof of the family's home, close to City Hall in Granite City.

The investigation remains ongoing.
