ALTON – An Alton man accused of battering two police officers and taking one’s taser as they attempted to arrest him remains in custody pending felony charges.

Taron A. Steward, 25, of Alton, was charged on Dec. 19, 2025, with one count of disarming a peace officer (a Class 1 felony) and two counts of aggravated battery (both Class 2 felonies).
The day prior on Dec. 18, 2025, Steward allegedly took a taser from a police officer without the officer’s consent and struck the same officer in the hand. He is additionally accused of striking a different officer in the face with his hand.
According to the state’s petition to deny Steward’s pretrial release from custody, officers responded to a reported disturbance at the victim’s residence and, upon arrival, were advised Steward was damaging property inside the home. The situation escalated further after officers attempted to place Steward under arrest.
“Defendant, while resisting arrest, struck an officer about the face with his hand and then obtained control over an officer’s taser,” the petition states. “He was eventually placed under arrest.”
Steward’s case was presented by the Alton Police Department, and he currently remains in custody at the Madison County Jail.
All individuals charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
