BELLEVILLE – A Belleville resident accused of fleeing from Madison County deputies at over 100 mph while on pretrial release from custody faces a new set of felony charges.

Michael C. Ault, 41, of Belleville, was charged on May 21, 2026 with a Class 3 felony count of unlawful possession of methamphetamine and two Class 4 felony counts of aggravated fleeing or attempting to elude a peace officer.
Ault allegedly knowingly attempted to flee from a Madison County Sheriff’s Deputy who had given Ault a visual or audible signal to stop the vehicle he was driving on March 26, 2026. His attempted flight from the officer reportedly exceeded 21 mph over the legal speed limit and involved the disobedience of two or more traffic control devices. He was also allegedly in possession of less than 5 grams of methamphetamine.
According to the state’s petition to deny Ault’s pretrial release from custody in this case, Ault fled from a traffic stop initiated by deputies at speeds of over 100 mph.
Ault reportedly “drove in the wrong direction on an exit ramp and then drove into opposing lanes of traffic,” according to the petition, which states he then “drove along a set of railroad tracks in an attempt to evade law enforcement.” He eventually fled the vehicle on foot before being detained.
At the time of this latest offense, Ault was on pretrial release from custody in a 2025 case of forgery, also filed in Madison County. The petition notes he had also previously fled from law enforcement on March 12, 2026.
The Madison County Sheriff’s Office presented the latest case against Ault, who was ordered remanded to jail for his initial court appearance in this case.
All individuals charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
