MADISON COUNTY - A driver was killed and others were injured on Thursday morning, Aug. 20, 2026, in separate crashes on Illinois 255 at New Poag Road in Madison County, where Illinois State Police Troop 8 responded to reports of a two-unit fatal crash and a jackknifed truck tractor semi-trailer.

State Police spokesperson Jayme Bufford said a preliminary investigation indicates Troop 8 responded at approximately 5:27 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 20, 2026, to northbound Illinois 255 at New Poag Road for a report of a two-unit fatal traffic crash. One driver was pronounced dead at the scene, State Police said.

State Police also reported a separate crash on the southbound side, where injuries were being reported.

Troop 8 was also responding at approximately 5:57 a.m. to the same area for a report of a jackknifed truck tractor semi-trailer.

Traffic on both the northbound and southbound sides is getting by on the shoulder. Motorists should avoid the area if at all possible, State Police said.
