EDWARDSVILLE – The Edwardsville Police Department is set to replace five vehicles in its fleet as it updates its in-car camera system with City Council approval.
Edwardsville City Council members approved a series of police-related resolutions at their June 2, 2026 meeting, including the purchase of new police vehicles and in-vehicle cameras totaling up to $387,971.44.
The following items were approved unanimously:
The purchase of four Ford Explorer vehicles and associated equipment for the Police Department at a cost of up to $248,932
The purchase of a Ford Explorer vehicle and associated equipment for Police Department use as an administrative vehicle at a cost of up to $53,443.44
Authorization for the Police Department to purchase six Axon in-car cameras for up to $85,596
According to a memo to City Council members, the Police Department was granted approval to purchase the four new squad cars to replace older vehicles within the department’s fleet. The $248,932 total will cover the cost to purchase and fully equip each car, and will be paid using Public Safety Facility funds.
The department was also granted approval to purchase a replacement administrative vehicle at a cost not to exceed $53,443.44 of Public Safety Facility funds. Each of the new vehicle purchase requests were approved during the city’s budgeting process for Fiscal Year 2026-2027.
Another memo regarding the in-vehicle cameras states Police Department staff first identified failures and compatibility issues with the department’s previous in-car camera system a few years ago. Staff determined the Axon fleet in-car camera system would be the most compatible with officers’ current body cameras.
While the department will have to purchase the cameras upfront, they will later apply for a state camera grant program to recover some or all of the cost.
