HARDIN - A woman who has made a gigantic impact on the Calhoun County area, worked her last shift on Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2025, as a full-time member of the sheriff's office team before retirement.
Tammy Betts, a longtime Lead Dispatcher and Administrative Coordinator with the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office, ended her 18-year career on Christmas Eve. Tammy marked the end of a remarkable 18-year career dedicated to public safety and community service.

Betts began her tenure with the sheriff’s office in 2007, shortly after Sheriff Bill Heffington took office. Throughout nearly two decades, she played a central role in the daily operations of the department, providing critical communication support for law enforcement and emergency medical services across Calhoun County.
Known for her compassionate approach, Betts often went beyond her official duties to assist citizens in need. She frequently helped individuals with complaints and connected them to resources aimed at improving their circumstances.
On numerous occasions, she personally purchased food, clothing, and other essentials for homeless residents, and helped facilitate their transition into housing — acts she performed quietly without seeking recognition.
As union steward for the sheriff’s office employees for many years, Betts advocated for her colleagues and contributed to various departmental improvements. Her voice became a constant on the Calhoun County Public Safety channel, relaying vital officer safety information, medical updates, weather reports, and coordinating emergency responses.
While she retires from full-time service, Betts will continue to assist the department in a limited part-time role starting in 2026, supporting the transition following Sheriff Heffington’s planned retirement.
“Tammy has been the heart of the office, and it’s hard to imagine how things are going to look without her in the dispatch chair as we move into 2026,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement. “Thank you for everything you’ve done for us, and for the citizens we serve. Your presence, and your vibrant plants and flowers, will surely be missed.”
Betts plans to spend the majority of her retirement enjoying personal time after nearly two decades of dedicated service to Calhoun County.
