ALTON - Marquette Catholic High School invites the community to come out to their fall play.
At 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 7 and Saturday, Nov. 8, 2025, you can catch “Alice in Wonderland” at Marquette in Alton. Madison Foreman, music and theater teacher, expressed her excitement to share the show with the community and her pride in her students for their hard work.
“I wanted to do a more classic story that everyone would know. But it has a modern twist with it,” she shared. “If you’re in the audience, you will get to become part of the show. You’ll interact with some characters. Make sure you’re paying attention the entire time, or the Mad Hatter and Cheshire Cat will mess with you.”
Heidi, a sophomore, plays Alice on Friday night. Another actress will take a turn as Alice on Saturday; Foreman explained that they wanted to “give more actors the opportunity to push themselves.” Akira, also a sophomore, plays the Queen of Hearts.
Both students are excited for opening night, though a little nervous. They previously participated in Marquette’s spring musical, “Freaky Friday,” which was nominated for the St. Louis High School Musical Theater Awards for Best Musical Direction. They are eager to perform in the “Alice in Wonderland” play with some of their best friends.
Akira shared that she enjoys getting into character as the Queen of Hearts. She noted that the Queen is a lot meaner than she is, but she enjoys pushing herself to be more expressive.
“I just think back to the movie, how she’s very irrational, very crazy,” Akira said. “I’m a loud person already. I like to be loud. So I just think, how loud can I really be? How loud and mad can I really be?”
Heidi added that Alice is “dainty” in most movie and play adaptations of the story, but she was determined to emphasize the character’s strength in her portrayal.
“She gains courage throughout the show,” Heidi explained. “By the end of it, she’s so confused and she’s out of place and she’s realizing, because of our twist on it, she’s not the same person she was when she got to Wonderland. So by the end of it, she has this really profound realization that she’s not the same person, who she was when she woke up.”
On Saturday night, Heidi will play March Hare and Tweedledee, which she is also looking forward to. Both students noted that there are many fun moments in the play, whether that’s the antics between Tweedledee and Tweedledum or the “very chaotic and very funny” trial.
Akira hopes to pursue theater in the future, while Heidi is still deciding what life holds after graduation. But both students are on track to have a great performance in “Alice in Wonderland” this weekend, and Foreman is proud of them for the work they’ve put in. Akira warns audience members to “expect the unexpected” while Heidi encourages all to enjoy “a classic tale with a twist.”
Tickets are free for Marquette students and children age 14 and under. Adult tickets cost $10 and can be purchased here.
