ILLINOIS – Direct Source Seafood LLC announced a recall of approximately 83,800 bags of frozen raw shrimp imported from Indonesia due to possible contamination with cesium-137, a man-made radioactive isotope.

The shrimp, sold under the Market 32 and Waterfront Bistro brands, may have been prepared, packed, or held under conditions that exposed the product to low levels of cesium-137. Two-pound bags under the Waterfront Bistro brand were sold at Jewel-Osco, Albertsons, Safeway, and Lucky supermarkets in Colorado, Iowa, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Montana, North Dakota, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Wyoming, with best-by dates of April 25 or 26, 2027, and sold on or after June 30, 2025.
Cesium-137 can pose health risks through long-term, repeated low-dose exposure, primarily by increasing the risk of cancer due to DNA damage. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is actively investigating reports of cesium-137 contamination in shipping containers and frozen shrimp products manufactured in Indonesia by PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati, operating as BMS Foods. According to an FDA statement from October 7, 2025, no products testing positive for cesium-137 had entered the U.S. marketplace at that time.
The recalled shrimp products include 1-pound bags sold at Price Chopper stores in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, and Vermont, with best-by dates ranging from April 22 to April 27, 2027, and sold after July 11, 2025.
The recall is being conducted with the knowledge of the FDA, which posted the company’s announcement as a public service. The FDA does not endorse the product or the company.
Consumers who have purchased affected shrimp should not consume the product and should dispose of or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
No illnesses related to the contaminated shrimp have been reported. Consumers who have purchased the affected products are advised not to consume them and to either dispose of the shrimp or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
