From adding underground cables to installing advanced switches and sensors to storm-hardening poles and power lines, Ameren is committed to supporting reliability and meeting unprecedented demand while keeping costs as low as possible for customers.
"Smart technology and system-hardening upgrades are critical to keeping our customers' lights on when severe weather strikes," says Tim Lafser, senior vice president of Energy Delivery and Operations Technical Services for Ameren Missouri. "These enhancements allow us to rapidly detect and isolate outages, restore power faster, and provide customers with greater reliability and peace of mind."
In Illinois, Ameren has made significant investments including automation to reduce the frequency and duration of power outages and stronger equipment to withstand the impacts of severe weather. Over the last 12 years, those grid improvements have increased reliability by more than 23%, helped avoid more than 6.5 million outages and saved customers more than $2 billion in outage-related costs.
Ameren has also added two custom-designed mobile command centers to its emergency preparedness fleet, which includes storm material trailers and mobile substations. Crews will be able to drive them wherever problems arise. This adaptability and portability will help increase response and restoration times.
