Betty Stein

Betty J. Stein, 93, of Staunton, IL, passed away at 8:15 PM on Saturday, August 15, 2026 at Staunton Health & Rehab Center in Staunton, IL. She was born June 24, 1933 in Gillespie, IL, the daughter of the late Wilbur & Mabel (Heldt) Hughes. She married Frederick W. “Fred” Stein Sr. on October 18, 1953 in Gillespie, IL & he passed away on November 17, 2017.

Betty was primarily a homemaker, but she did work as a Secretary for the State of Illinois in Springfield before she & Fred started a family. She was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals & Fighting Illini basketball, & enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren & great grandchildren.

She is survived by two sons - Greg (Cynthia) Stein of White City, IL, & Scott (Emma) Stein of Naperville, IL; two daughters - Vicky Sczurek of Staunton, IL, & Lori Stein of Staunton, IL; eight grandchildren - Matthew (Amanda) Stein, Kayleigh (Matt) Bessent, Kelsey (Kerry) Dyer, Kory Sczurek, Danielle (Jack) Ulricson, Amanda Stein, Amy Stein, & Jennifer Stein; eleven great grandchildren; two sisters - Ina Mae (George) Myers of Bushnell, IL, & Debbie (Galen) Garrett of Mt. Zion, IL; sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, & cousins also survive.

Besides her husband & parents, she was preceded in death by two sons - Fred Stein Jr. & Mark Stein; one sister - Katherine Ismari; & three brothers - Bud Hughes, Henry Hughes, & Louis Hughes.

Private services will be held on Friday, August 21, 2026 at Williamson Funeral Home in Staunton, IL, with private burial to follow at Memorial Park Cemetery in Staunton, IL. Memorials are suggested to the Diabetes Foundation.
