Doris Cunningham

Doris Irene Cunningham, 93, died at 7:50 p.m., Monday, April 2, 2012 at Jerseyville Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.She was born in Jalappa, near Kane, Il. on June 7, 1918, and was the daughter of the late Chester & Iva (Platto) Grizzle.  Her parents divorced when she was young, and went to live with her grandparents, Phil & Clara Platto, who gave her the greatest gift of all- their love.  Phil died in 1924, and Doris continued to reside with her grandmother.She married John Cunningham in October of 1936 and together they had a daughter.Doris worked in the apple orchards near Grafton, and also assisted in the daily operations of their farm in Grafton before moving to Jerseyville in 1984.She loved to garden and work in the yard, but truthfully she just enjoyed being on the go and staying busy. She was fascinated by the lottery and took delight in her winnings, even though it never exceeded the $10 amount.Surviving are a daughter & son in law, Roberta & Lloyd of Heflin of rural Medora; two sisters & a brother in law, Phyllis and Don Bradfisch of Wood River and Theda Jones of Jerseyville; a brother & sister in law, Walter & Geri Grizzle of Kane; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.She was preceded in death by two sisters & brothers in law, Edith & Don Zimmerman and Mary & Don Miller; and a brother in law, Everett Jones.Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday.Burial will be in the Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey.Doris loved all animals, so in her honor, memorials may be given to the Riverbend Humane Society in Jerseyville
