James Mowrey

James R. Mowrey Sr., 94, of Godfrey, passed away on  November 4, 2023 at Asbury Village in Godfrey, IL. 

He was born on August 2, 1929, in Hartford, the son of Marion & Mary (Rathgeb) Mowrey.

James dedicated 22 years of his life to his work as an Operator at Amoco Oil Company. Beyond his professional life, he was known for his deep passion for the St. Louis Cardinals, often cheering for his favorite baseball team with enthusiasm. James also enjoyed spending time on the bowling alley lanes and was a computer enthusiast.

He leaves behind a legacy of love and family, and is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, James R. Jr. & Patty J. Mowrey, of Dundas, IL, Bob & Melissa Mowrey of Billings, MO;  a stepdaughter and a stepson-in-law, Cindy & Terry Zirkelbach of Brighton; a stepdaughter and stepson-in-law, Dana & David Brantley of Godfrey; two stepsons, Scott Simons of Alton and Stanley Simons of Godfrey; 21 grandkids and 24 great-grandkids

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by an infant brother, John Robert Mowrey, and two sisters and brothers-in-law,  Ruth & Lloyd Harris and Marilyn & Bud Harris. 

Friends and family are invited to pay their respects during the visitation on Wednesday, November 8, 2023, from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm at Elias, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home in Alton. 

Following the visitation, graveside services and military honors conducted by Alton VFW Post 1308 will be held at Upper Alton Cemetery, honoring James for his service to his country.

Memorials are suggested to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
