Randell Lee Legendre, age 79, of Staunton, IL passed away peacefully on August 19, 2026, at 6:29 PM, in his home surrounded by his family.
Born on July 14, 1947, in Clinton, Iowa to Kenneth and Jeanne (Lake) Legendre. He attended Clinton High School with the graduating class of 1965. Randy then graduated from Northeast Missouri State University with a teaching degree where he was also a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon.
His first teaching position led him to Staunton, IL, where he met Kathy Stiegemeier. They were married on March 30, 1974. His passion for education led him to 43 years teaching, guiding, coaching, and shaping almost every child that walked the halls of Staunton Community District #6. While teaching, Randy was often seen outside of the classroom coaching football, track & field, and basketball.
If you did not know Randy Legendre prior to 1993, there was a good chance you did after 1993 when he led his beloved Bulldogs to the State Championship. This was one of his most meaningful accomplishments, and this group of boys became family, reuniting yearly to relive the memories. He was voted the Illinois Basketball Coaching Association Coach of the Year in 1994.
He also volunteered his coaching expertise on the city field coaching little league baseball. Randy “retired” in May 2003 but was seen for the next 10 years in the hallways officially retiringin May 2013. Outside of his teaching career, Randy was active in serving his community as an alderman, delivering meals on wheels, and volunteering at the hospital. Randy was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes and St. Louis Cardinals fan, often attending games and even served as a Cardinals Usher.
Randy is survived by his wife Kathy and his children, David (Erin) Legendre of Red Bud, IL, Kari (Bill) Weise of Memphis, TN, Jon (Stefanie) Legendre of Staunton, IL, and Brad (Angie) Legendre, of Staunton, IL, and his biggest source of pride, his grandchildren, Anni (Hunter) Frohock, Madelyn (Ryan) Best, Kennedy (fiancé Cody Ury), Haris, Carter, Kadyn, Corbyn and Declan. Also surviving; sister-in-law JoEllen (Kevin) Zuber, brother-in-law Del David Stiegemeier, and sister-in-law Mary Sue Stiegemeier along with multiple cousins, nieces, and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Don, and his in laws Delbert and Josephine Stiegemeier, and numerous aunts and uncles.
Visitation will be Friday, September 4, 2026, from 5 to 8 PM at Williamson Funeral Home in Staunton, IL and again Saturday, September 5, 2026, from 9 to 10:45 AM at Williamson Funeral Home in Staunton. A Memorial Mass will be held Saturday, September 5, 2026, at 11 AM at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Staunton with Father Mike Haag officiating. A private burial will be held at Staunton City Cemetery immediately following the Memorial Mass.
Memorials are suggested to Staunton School District to help pay for outstanding student meal balances within the school district, the Staunton Sports Boosters, or for a scholarship in honor of Randy for future educators/coaches.
