Richard Akeman

Richard Gale Akeman, 82, passed away at 9:58 pm on Thursday, February 16, 2012 at Jerseyville Manor Nursing Home in Jerseyville.   

 

He was born on December 6, 1929 in Granite City, IL, the son of Gale and Merle (Berry) Akeman. 

He married Beverly Roberson on April 15, 1990 in Las Vegas, NV.  She survives.

Richard served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and then in the Coast Guard Auxiliary.  He was a senior control technician at Union Electric.  He was of the Lutheran faith.  He attended Washington University and he enjoyed mushroom hunting, boating, gardening, working on trains and loved World War I and World War II history.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children and their spouses, Susan Patrick of Mobile, AL, Janet and Dale Roth of St. Paul, MO, Mark and Donna Akeman of Godfrey, Lora and John Gant of Fenton, MO and Rick and Gail Akeman of Wood River; twelve grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, Sam and Mary Jo Akeman of Granite City and his nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Betta Lou Akeman, a stepson, Greg Roberson and two brothers, Billy Akeman and Robert Akeman.

Visitation will be from 2 until services at 6 pm on Sunday, February 19, 2012 at Elias, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto with Pastor Mark Hofferber officiating.

Burial will be on Monday, February 20, 2012 at St. Peter’s Cemetery in Belnore, Missouri at 11:00 am.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
